Cherry Blossoms

Experience spring in the park with Japanese Yoshino cherry trees! The perfect spot for family photos, a picnic, or a beautiful view of the trees in front of the downtown skyline.

Current Bloom Status
The cherry trees are past peak bloom. Blossoms are still are the trees, however they are not as full and leaves are beginning to appear. (Bloom status updated April 2, 2026)

Why does the park have cherry trees?
In 2012, Indianapolis was gifted 52 Yoshino cherry trees from Japan. The gift celebrated the 100th anniversary of the blooming of cherry blossoms in Washington D.C. and honors the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan. The park is thankful to the Japan-America Society of Indiana (JASI) for furthering this partnership between the park, the state of Indiana, and Japan.

How do I get to the trees?
The cherry blossom trees can be found in White River State Park between the Indianapolis Zoo and the west bank of the White River. Visitors can park in the White River State Park parking garage, walk across the Old Washington Street Bridge and see the trees to the left near Waterfront Pavilion.

When do the tree bloom?
The Yoshino cherry trees typically bloom in late March or early April.

Blooms are weather dependent.
The cherry blossoms typically bloom for 1-2 weeks depending on the weather. Calm, cool weather can extend the bloom, but strong winds or storms can bring an abrupt end to the bloom. The park will update the bloom status when able, but an 100% accurate report is not guaranteed.
