Did you know this IMAX theater is 1 of 30 theaters worldwide who were able to show Chistopher Nolan’s famous film Oppenheimer on IMAX 70mm film? Film fanatics from across the country travel here for this truly special and rare movie experience.
Most theaters have digital movies, but this theater has both digital and film movies. Film is shipped to the theater in pieces, leaving the staff with a large, heavy puzzle to build for the public’s viewing pleasures.
The struggle is worth it! IMAX 70mm film contains 10x larger frames and aspect ratio than its more traditional 35mm counterpart. This allows for a much more detailed picture. IMAX 70mm film contains 15 perforations per frame and is filmed horizontally, creating and even larger picture and more immersive experience with improved audio.
While I did not grow up even remotely close to the State Museum’s IMAX, I do still have a core memory here.
I grew up watching the Harry Potter films as they were released and was enchanted by the magical world which I so badly wished I could have been part of. When the final movie came to theaters, my family made the trip from Northern Indiana to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. This was easily the closest I will get to being told “you’re a wizard, Ashley!”
While I will never harness magical powers, I will continue to love movies and indulge in worlds that fascinate me. Now that I live within a reasonable distance from the theater, you can find me with a big bucket of popcorn watching whatever new film IMAX is showing.
What’s the next big movie in IMAX 70mm film? Sinners. This theater is the only theater within 500 miles to feature this movie in this format. Now THAT is quite the statistic.
Sinners premieres April 18th. Get your tickets today!
