Giant Tortoises at the Indianapolis Zoo!

The Indianapolis Zoo recently welcomed five new giant Aldabra tortoises!

Hannah Baer • July 24, 2025

The Indianapolis Zoo recently welcomed five new giant Aldabra tortoises! Their final home is under construction, but in the meantime these guys are hanging out at their current home called “The Pit Stop,” located near the flamingos. They will move to their final home in the fall of 2025 after construction is complete. The new habitat will be located next to the Deserts.

My favorite fun fact I learned was that giant tortoises can live well beyond 150 years. The current crew of giant Aldabra tortoises includes A.J., Lynn St. James, Little Dot, Morla, and Maude. Both A.J. and Lynn St. James were formerly residents at the Indianapolis Zoo and are now back. This was such a fun experience to see these giant Aldabra tortoises up close and interacting with each other! This exhibit is very informative and educational for all ages. It is something that everyone can enjoy!
