Cherry Blossoms at White River State Park

What’s that one saying? “April showers bring May flowers.” Well, at White River State Park, you can have a happy mix of both in early April with the beautiful display of Japanese Yoshino cherry blossoms.

With the random patch of warmth Mother Nature decided to gift us with, I decided it was a perfect day to utilize the park for a walk and found myself pleasantly surprised with the cotton candy-like trees staring back at me from a distance. Of course, this prompted me to venture across the Old Washington Street Bridge to the Waterfront Pavillion where they hover over the walkway.

Personally, I am a history nerd, so let me indulge that side of myself for a second.

Back in 1912, Japan sent a rather huge shipment of 3,000 Yoshino cherry blossoms to Washington D.C. as the trees symbolize friendship. How does this tie to the park? Great question. On the 100th anniversary, 52 trees were donated to the park to symbolize continued friendship.

Because of this continued commitment between our two nations, we can now enjoy the blossoms without making a trip across the pond.

Cherry blossoms only last up to 2 weeks, so hurry out to the park to enjoy these once-a-year eye candies. Plus, you can stop by the Indianapolis Zoo for xZOOberance or catch an Indianapolis Indians baseball game to continue enjoying some proper sunshine time.
